West Ham reportedly didn’t include a goal clause with Ajax following the sale of former striker Sebastien Haller in 2020.
According to the Athletic, the Irons don’t have an add-on in their deal with the Dutch giants for the Ivory Coast international. It is not uncommon for big-money transfers to receive a bonus if the transferred player scores a certain number of goals.
However, West Ham didn’t negotiate a clause with Ajax for Haller. The striker signed for the Eredivisie side last year in the January window. And the 27-year-old attacker is flourishing in Amsterdam.
This season alone has seen the former Eintracht Frankfurt star score nine goals in all competitions. With Haller last week hitting four in a single game in the UEFA Champions League against Sporting Lisbon.
Indeed, had West Ham negotiated an add-on clause for Haller’s goals, there’s no doubt that the Hammers would have received a significant fee for their former attacker on top of the £20m they initially received from Ajax for the attacker.
With the striker scoring in a 9-0 win for Ajax over the weekend, West Ham might be starting to regret not negotiating a goal clause into Haller’s deal with the Dutch side.
However, as per the report, it would have been unlikely that West Ham would have succeeded in adding such a clause into a deal with Haller.
Given how good the attacker is and the quality of the Eredivisie is compared to the Premier League, Haller is likely to hit a high number of goals for Ajax. Meaning that any bonus would have just been added to the transfer fee originally paid last year.
