West Ham United are close to sealing a £12.5m deal for the Brentford striker, but could their former forward still be attracting their attention?

A report in the Daily Mail has suggested that West Ham United are on the verge of completing a £12.5 million deal for Brentford striker Scott Hogan, and that a deal for the 24-year-old would not necessarily end their interest in bringing Jermain Defoe back to the club.

The Mail reports that the Hammers have held talks with the Bees this weekend and now appear to be close to completing their first deal of the January transfer window.

But his seemingly-imminent move may not be the last striker signing the Irons make during this window, as the Mail reports that they are keeping a keen eye on what developments occur regarding Defoe’s situation at Sunderland.

The Sun recently reported that West Ham had made £5 million and £6 million bids for the 34-year-old, but had seen both turned down by the Black Cats.

However, it appears that the Hammers are not giving up on a potential deal as the Mail reports that they are ready to make another offer on one condition.

According to the Mail, they are waiting to see whether Defoe asks to leave Sunderland before they make an improved bid.

Given that Defoe continues to defy his advancing years by scoring regularly in a struggling team – which may perhaps give Hammers fans hope regarding what he could do in Bilic’s team – and that Hogan has been incredibly impressive in the Championship this term, it would surely be deemed a much better window than the one they endured in the summer if they managed to bring both men to the London Stadium.
