The Hammers are allegedly trying to cut short the loan spell of a summer flop.
West Ham United are actively looking to cut short the loan spell of summer flop Simone Zaza to make room to make a new attacking signing in January, according to ESPN.
The Hammers signed Zaza as their ‘marquee’ striker in the summer transfer window after failing with pursuits of top stars of European football such as Carlos Bacca and Alexandre Lacazette.
So far in a claret-and-blue shirt, however, the Italian forward has not met with success, failing to score in any of his nine appearances in all competitions.
Frustrating is growing with the 25-year-old, whom West Ham will be obliged to sign permanently if he makes 15 appearances in all competitions, for a reported fee somewhere in the region of £17-20 million.
However, according to ESPN, the Hammers hierarchy are intending to instead cut their losses and send Zaza back to his parent club Juventus in January.
That is a strategy allegedly designed to free up space for the London club to sign a new attacker in January as they continue their search for a regular supply of goals in attack.
West Ham have not had much luck with their strikers in recent times. £20 million summer signing Andre Ayew picked up a serious injury on his debut, and Andy Carroll has struggled with form and fitness, as is typical.
Remarkably, none of the Irons’ five recognised strikers – Zaza, Ayew, Carroll, and youngsters Jonathan Calleri and Ashley Fletcher – have scored a single goal this season, despite the quintet racking up 35 appearances between them.
