West Bromwich Albion have asked Newcastle United to sign Dwight Gayle on a loan deal in the summer transfer window, according to The Chronicle.

It has been reported that West Brom – who will play in the Championship next season after getting relegated from the Premier League – have asked for Gayle on a season-long loan deal.

Newcastle, though, turned down the Baggies’ offer, according to the report, which claims that manager Rafael Benitez wants to hold onto the former Crystal Palace striker for the 2018-19 campaign.

Gayle is still unproven at the Premier League level, but the 28-year-old striker does give options to Newcastle.

Although the Magpies need a proven goalscorer, they cannot let the former Peterborough United striker leave without signing a suitable player to take his place.

Gayle – who earns £40,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac.com – made 23 starts and 12 substitute appearances in the Premier League last season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in the process.
