West Bromwich Albion wanted to sign Marcos Alonso from Premier League rivals Chelsea in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.
It has been reported that West Brom considered signing the Chelsea left-back as a potential replacement for Kieran Gibbs.
Inter Miami wanted to secure the services of the former Arsenal left-back, but the financial terms did not satisfy the Baggies or the player, according to the report.
The report has added that West Brom considered making a late move for Alonso, but the dismissal of Frank Lampard and the arrival of Thomas Tuchel saw the left-back get back into the starting lineup, and that put flight to the Baggies’ hopes of bringing him to The Hawthorns.
Unlikely January transfer?
Chelsea are challenging for the Champions League places in the Premier League table at the moment, while West Brom are in real danger of going back down to the Championship.

Alonso, 30, has been at the Blues since 2016 and has won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
It is hard to see the Spain international, who can also operate as a wing-back, being willing to make the move to the Baggies in the middle of the season.
According to WhoScored, Alonso has made five starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League for Chelsea so far this season, scoring one goal in the process.
