Report: West Brom’s Salomon Rondon ‘poised’ to make Newcastle move

Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (08/07; page 61), Salomon Rondon is poised to make the move from West Brom to Newcastle this summer after the two clubs made contact in the past few days.

Rondon is currently gearing up for a season in the Championship with the Baggies, but their relegation has activated a £16.5 million release clause in his contract that the Magpies are now reportedly ready to meet.

The Sun on Sunday (08/07; page 61) reports that Newcastle have been in contact with West Brom recently, and Rondon is now ‘poised’ to make the move to St James’ Park in what would be a club-record deal, eclipsing the £16 million that was spent on Michael Owen 13 years ago.

Rondon does not boast the most remarkable goalscoring record from his time in the Premier League, but has been a popular player amongst the West Brom fans for much of his time at The Hawthorns, with his work-rate often applauded by the supporters.

Newcastle definitely need to strengthen their options up front this summer, but it would be little surprise if the prospect of signing Rondon did not exactly capture the imagination of the Toon Army.

Though they would be delighted to see a deal completed with Martin Dubravka still the only arrival thus far, the Venezuelan will probably need to end his wait to reach double figures in a single Premier League season at the next opportunity to prove that he was worth the outlay.
