West Bromwich Albion’s hopes of landing Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho have been dealt a significant blow after Bastian Schweinsteiger rejected a move to the Portuguese club, the Birmingham Mail reports.

The Baggies had made what would be a club-record bid of £21m for the Portugal international, the Mail reports, and while their offer has still not been rejected, the fact that the Manchester United midfielder will not be heading in the opposite direction has left a possible deal in some doubt.

Sporting want a replacement lined up before they allow the Euro 2016 winner to move to the Hawthorns, and the Mail claims that they had made the former Bayern Munich man their number one target.

But after being snubbed by the 32-year-old, Sporting are running out of time to find the kind of player whose arrival would soften the blow of losing such a key man.

One factor that may perhaps work in West Brom’s favour is the fact that Portugal’s transfer window is set to remain open until late September, the Mail claims.

So while Sporting would not be able to sign any players from one of Europe’s bigger leagues after today, as unlikely as it may seem, they may be more willing to sanction a deal if they have a target lined up who can be signed once tonight’s deadline comes and goes, especially if they want the funds to bolster their squad over the coming weeks.
