As confirmed on Middlesbrough’s website, Duncan Watmore has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract to end speculation over his future.

The former Sunderland attacker was recently linked with a move to West Brom by the Daily Mail.

That same report stated that Burnley were eyeing the forward too.

Now, however, it seems as if Watmore will be spending the foreseeable future on Teesside after extending his stay at the Riverside Stadium.

This news will presumably come as a shame to Sam Allardyce.

It was at Sunderland where the 26-year-old blossomed under the ex-England manager, and it would’ve been intriguing to see the pair reunite.

Such was Watmore’s good form at the Stadium of Light, Jermain Defoe even compared the forward to Tottenham and Wales star Gareth Bale.

The BBC quote Defoe as saying: ‘In a funny way he reminds me of Gareth. When he came on the scene at Tottenham, he used to just get the ball and glide.’

The Manchester-born marksman has enjoyed a new lease of life under Neil Warnock at Boro.

Having been released by Sunderland, Watmore joined the Championship outfit where he has netted five goals in eight league games.

His fine form saw him nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award, which isn’t bad going at all when you’re effectively on trial!

After he put pen to paper on fresh terms, it seems as if Allardyce will have to move on to his next target.
