West Bromwich Albion and Watford are watching Crawley Town hotshot Max Watters, with the January transfer window just three weeks away, as reported by the Mail.

You have got to feel for Darren Moore.

The Doncaster boss, and Baggies legend, had planned to include Watters in his first-team plans at the Keepmoat this season.

But, speaking to the Free Press, Moore admitted that a combination of stretched finances and a desire for regular football meant that Rovers had little choice but to let the London-born striker leave when his contract expired on July 1.

“He’s got all the attributes,” Moore said of Watters. “He’s a powerful man, he can play in a variety of positions in that front line. He boasts tremendous speed.

“He’s got an eye for goal and gets in the right places. He’s got wonderful attributes.”

Unfortunately for Moore, it has taken a move away from Doncaster for Watters to showcase those ‘wonderful attributes’ on a regular basis.

The 21-year-old is one of the hottest forwards in the Football League right now, scoring 12 times in just 14 matches since joining fourth-tier Crawley on a free transfer.

After less than half a season with the Red Devils, the Mail reports that Watters is a target for a Watford side whose promotion ambitions are at risk of being undermined by a lack of goals.

West Brom are interested too.

Hey, the sight of Watters scoring in the Premier League at The Hawthorns would at least be some consolation for Moore.

Doncaster’s one-that-got-away will reportedly cost somewhere in the region of £1 million.
