David Button is set to become West Bromwich Albion’s first new face of the summer after talks with the Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper reached an advanced stage, according to the Express and Star.
With less than a fortnight remaining until the new Premier League season kicks off, the only permanent signing to join Slaven Bilic’s squad in the summer so far has been a man who spent 2019/20 on loan at the Hawthorns – Brazilian assist-machine Matheus Pereira.
So while Button is hardly the sort of addition to get hairs standing up on end or Baggies fans planning for a long spell back in the big time, his impending arrival at least represents a step in the right direction and a breakthrough in their recruitment plans.
West Brom have been in talks with the Brighton goalkeeper for some time. According to the Express and Star, negotiations have progressed of late and Button should be unveiled at the Hawthorns in the next couple of days.

Brighton want £1 million for their 31-year-old back-up goalkeeper, although West Brom hope to agree a reduced fee.
It remains to be seen whether the Midland giants are willing to finally stump up the seven-figure sum required.
Either way, former Tottenham, Fulham and Brentford shot-stopper Button will provide competition for Sam Johnstone’s number-one shirt, with Jonathan Bond leaving the Baggies on a free.
