West Bromwich Albion reportedly face competition from AC Milan and Inter Milan for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho.

According to The Mirror, West Bromwich Albion remain keen on signing Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho in January – but face competition from both AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Sakho, 26, has endured a difficult 2016. The French centre back was investigated over a failed drugs test back in April (BBC Sport) and has since been frozen out of the Liverpool squad by manager Jurgen Klopp.

The former Paris Saint-Germain ace hasn’t made a single appearance this season, and is firmly behind Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan in the pecking order at Anfield.

With Sakho needing first-team football, many expect him to move on in January, even though BBC Sport reported that he snubbed loan moves to Premier League rivals Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion in August.

Now, The Mirror report that West Brom remain keen on signing Sakho on loan, but face a real battle for his signature given that Italian giants AC Milan and Inter Milan are also believed to be keen on the Frenchman.

West Brom will see centre backs Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson turn 37 and 34 respectively in the coming months, and manager Tony Pulis may well see Sakho as a younger defender who can bring athleticism to the Baggies back line.

Convincing Sakho to make the move to West Midlands may be difficult though considering that he snubbed the same move just three months ago, and that task has been made even harder by alleged interest from elsewhere.

Serie A sides AC Milan and Inter Milan both want defensive reinforcements, and see Liverpool outcast Sakho as a potential solution with a loan deal – and the chance to play at the San Siro may be the opportunity that Sakho is looking for having snubbed a switch to The Hawthorns in August.
