Sam Field is unlikely to ever play for West Bromwich Albion again after leaving the Baggies for a loan spell at Queens Park Rangers in the January transfer window, according to the Birmingham Mail.
It is four years now since Tony Pulis was left open-mouthed by the performance of an 18-year-old midfielder who, at the time, looked destined to be the future of the West Brom midfield.
“Technically, he’s as good and as gifted as any footballer I’ve seen at that age,” the then-Baggies boss explained. “I think he’s going to be a fantastic player for the club.”
But like Jonathan Leko and Rekeem Harper, who also caught the eye of Pulis during the 2017/18 campaign, Field didn’t manage to build on a fine start to his top-flight career.
The Stourbridge-born talent has started just four league games for West Brom in the last two-and-a-half years.
After failing to force his way into the respective plans of Slaven Bilic and Sam Allardyce, he joined QPR on a short-term loan deal in January.

According to the Birmingham Mail, even an impressive spell at Loftus Road is unlikely to save Field’s West Brom career. It would be a major surprise if he ever donned those navy-and-white stripes again.
“When the opportunity came up, I wanted to snatch it,” Field told QPR’s official website, making it clear that he was tired of life on the sidelines at The Hawthorns.
“Hopefully it can become a permanent thing (transfer), because I think I need a fresh start. I’m really looking forward to the future and getting some games.
“I think you can become part of the furniture if you’re not careful, and that’s no disrespect to West Brom. I’ve enjoyed my time there, I’ve loved every minute, but I think for myself personally I need to go away now and play games.”
