West Bromwich Albion should make a concerted effort to sign French Under-21 midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco in the winter transfer window, having been linked to the player earlier in the year, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

Bakayoko is in his third season at the principality club, having joined from Rennes in 2014, and this year the powerful and skilful youngster looks to be very much involved in the club’s plans, having played more of a bit part in his first two campaigns.

With 11 appearances to his name this season, Bakayoko was one of Monaco’s most impressive players in the recent Wembley win over Spurs in the Champions League, displaying technical quality and defensive resilience to keep the Londoners from netting an equaliser.

In August, the Birmingham Mail had quoted the midfielder’s agent Michel Boli as telling French media that the Baggies are one of a number of clubs keeping a close eye on the player, several of whom are Premier League outfits.

“Juventus saw him play three times this summer,” the Mail quoted Boli as saying. “There’s also interest from Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City.

“Leicester City contacted us very recently. Tiemoue’s priority is to stay at Monaco.”

West Brom will clearly have to be at their most persuasive to talk Bakayoko into choosing the Hawthorns over the European football likely to be available at some of the clubs mentioned above, but Tony Pulis’ side have something the aforementioned rivals for his signature can’t offer if he decides to leave Monaco – a starting role for the 22-year-old.

The Baggies were pursuing central midfield additions for much of the summer, only to fail in their attempts to bring in the likes of Ignacio Camacho from Malaga. Bakayoko would be an excellent addition to their side, and would slot right into the first choice eleven.
