West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United are both interested in Everton midfielder James McCarthy.
Everton’s James McCarthy could be allowed to leave this summer
A report in the Daily Mirror has suggested that West Brom are in pole position to sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy this summer with Newcastle unwilling to meet his asking price.
The Mirror reports that, despite having fans amongst the Toffees hierarchy, Ronald Koeman is ready to let the 26-year-old leave Goodison Park this summer, provided that they receive a fee in excess of £15 million.
Newcastle are reluctant to pay McCarthy’s asking price
With the Magpies reluctant to pay such a figure, the Mirror reports that Tony Pulis is the favourite to land his signature during the coming months having earmarked the Republic of Ireland international as the ideal replacement for Darren Fletcher.
Fletcher left the Hawthorns earlier in the window to join the Baggies’ Premier League rivals Stoke City on a free transfer, leaving West Brom to now consider a move for McCarthy.
Ronald Koeman is ready to sanction McCarthy’s exit
Given that McCarthy has struggled for game time under Koeman this past season, it will perhaps be a surprise if the West Brom fans are not cautious about the idea of the club spending such a significant fee on the player if that is what they decide to do.
The former Wigan man played just 12 times in the top flight last term, and is yet to play a full 90 minutes for the Toffees in 2017, so Pulis will surely have to be confident that his season on the periphery of the Everton squad has not done him too much harm.
