West Bromwich Albion have held talks with Brighton and Hove Albion but are reluctant to pay the £1 million asking price required for goalkeeper David Button, according to the Express and Star.

While the Baggies have barely spent a penny this summer, with last season’s loan star Matheus Pereira their only new signing so far, that doesn’t mean panic is setting in despite only a fortnight to go until the Premier League season kicks off.

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic is keen to bring in competition for current number one Sam Johnstone and Button, an experienced 31-year-old who spent last season on Brighton’s bench, has emerged as a priority target.

But, as the Express and Star points out, the newly promoted side has little interest in paying a seven-figure sum for a man who would be likely to take a back-seat role at the Hawthorns.

Talks are ongoing, though, with West Brom hoping to agree a reduced fee for a man Brighton value at £1 million.

The Baggies have already missed out on their top target, with Ivo Grbic rejecting a move to England to seal a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” at Atletico Madrid, according to Marca.

Bilic admitted to Index HR he “did everything” he possibly could to convince the young Croatian to snub the La Liga giants, describing Grbic as a “top goalkeeper”.
