West Bromwich Albion are reportedly fearing a Newcastle bid for Salomon Rondon.
According to The Mirror, West Bromwich Albion are fearing that Newcastle United are poised to activate the release clause in striker Salomon Rondon’s contract.
The Baggies suffered relegated from the Premier League last season and saw star defender Jonny Evans move on to Leicester City in recent days, with more departures expected.
Burnley are pushing to bring in Craig Dawson and Jay Rodriguez, whilst there are now mounting concerns over the future of striker Salomon Rondon.
The Venezuelan international, 28, has hit 28 goals in 119 games for West Brom since his 2015 move from Zenit St Petersburg, including 10 goals this past season.
Rondon was always unlikely to stay in the Championship, and The Mirror now report that West Brom are worried that Newcastle are about to activate the £16.5million release clause in his contract.
That would be a considerable outlay for Newcastle, but it’s claimed that manager Rafael Benitez is a fan of Rondon and is ready to prise him away from The Hawthorns.
Benitez snapped up Islam Slimani on loan from Leicester City in January with no impact, and may now see Rondon as the physical striker he wants to lead the Newcastle attack.
West Brom wouldn’t be able to stand in Rondon’s way, and heading to Tyneside may be appealing to the burly striker, as he may be guaranteed playing time given Newcastlte’s lack of attacking options.
