West Bromwich Albion have reportedly added Leeds United talisman Kalvin Phillips to their wishlist.

West Brom plan to make a move for Leeds star Kalvin Phillips should they get promoted this season and the Whites fail to capitalise on their current position in the Championship table, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (09/12; page 57).

Phillips has been in fantastic form for the Whites throughout the campaign. He has started all 21 of Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s league games and been crucial to their form.

The 23-year-old has featured in holding midfield and centre-back having spent most of last season being used as an option further up the pitch.

His goals tally has certainly taken a hit, but his importance to the side has risen rapidly. It could be argued that no player is more vital to the balance of the side than Phillips.

Leeds now sit second in the second tier and one of their promotion rivals is apparently keen to try and pinch Phillips during the summer.

Darren Moore head coach

The Sun on Sunday (09/12; page 57) reports that the Baggies are interested in the £10 million-rated Whites academy graduate, but are aware that Leeds currently have no plans to sell the youngster.

The report suggests therefore, that West Brom will look to bid if they are promoted and Leeds miss out on going up in the hope that Phillips will want to jump ship and play Premier League football elsewhere.

Given Moore’s preference to use a back three, Phillips would arguably be a fantastic signing for the Baggies if they managed to bring him to The Hawthorns.

He has shown recently that he is a very capable quarterback for Leeds, and can perform the role whether he is in midfield or the spare man in defence.

Bielsa’s men should certainly need no further incentive to try and take advantage of their current position in the table. But West Brom apparently eyeing a move for Phillips if they go up and Leeds do not, will undoubtedly provide additional motivation for the high-flyers.
