Report: West Brom expected to sign Sam Johnstone this week

West Bromwich Albion are reportedly set to complete a deal to sign Sam Johnstone this week.

According to a report from the Express and Star, West Brom are expecting to complete their first signing of the summer during the coming week with a £5 million deal for Manchester United stopper Sam Johnstone edging closer.

The Baggies are preparing for life in the Championship, and while Darren Moore’s men have a lot of momentum due to how they finished last season, they are still awaiting their first signing of the window.

And the West Brom fans’ anxiety may well have been building with Jonny Evans already out the door and the Express and Star reporting that goalkeeper Ben Foster and defender Craig Dawson both skipped the club’s training camp amid links with a quick return to the top flight for the pair.

However, it appears that the ball may be about to start rolling, as the Express and Star is now reporting that a £5 million move for Johnstone is set to be completed imminently, seemingly paving the way for the 25-year-old to become the club’s first signing of the window.

Johnstone could be a fantastic signing for the Baggies, especially given the £5 million fee. The stopper was superb during his second loan spell at Aston Villa last season and so nearly helped the club secure promotion to the top flight.

If West Brom are going to lose Foster this summer – and it is not clear whether Johnstone arriving will pave the way for the veteran to leave the club – then signing Johnstone as his replacement may prove to be a very shrewd piece of business from the Baggies.
