Accrording to reports from El Dia in Argentina, West Bromwich Albion have shown an interest in signing Boca Juniors midfielder Wilmar Barrios this summer.

The Baggies are attempting to rebuild following their relegation to the Championship, and new full-time manager Darren Moore will be looking for major reinforcements.

Whilst links continue with Romaine Sawyers and Bobby Reid, West Brom are now being linked with an audacious bid to sign a midfielder currently at the World Cup in Russia.

El Dia in Argentina report that West Brom have shown an interest in Colombia’s Wilmar Barrios, who turns out for Boca Juniors on the domestic stage.

Barrios, 24, has been a key part of the Boca side since his 2016 move from Deportes Tolima, and has earned plaudits for his combative nature, even earning the tag as ‘the Colombian Kante’.

He may not have been named in Colombia’s line-up to face Japan this afternoon, but he is widely expected to play a part at the World Cup, even if only as cover for Carlos Sanchez and Jefferson Lerma.

Barrios would allegedly cost around £14.5million, making him a major investment if West Brom do push through a move, though their interest is particularly audacious given the recent talk about Barrios’ future.

As reported by The Independent, Tottenham Hotspur have been strongly linked with Barrios, with Boca begging the midfielder not to make a move to North London and instead stay until January so he can play in the Copa Libertadores.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs do push on with a move, but West Brom could now launch a bold move to rival Mauricio Pochettino for the Colombian star this summer.
