Watford have held talks with Newcastle United over a loan deal for Christian Atsu with Nottingham Forest expected to miss out to their Championship rivals, according to the Northern Echo.

Talk about a hangover.

With that final day collapse against Swansea City still bouncing around the minds of everyone at the City Ground, a Forest side that slipped out of the play-offs in humiliating fashion in July has started the 2020/21 campaign in similarly calamitous style.

Sabri Lamouchi is clinging to his job by the skin of his teeth after losing four out of four since the Championship returned to our screens.

And, just to rub salt into the wounds, Nottingham Forest are set to lose out to Watford in the race to sign Ghana international winger Atsu from Newcastle.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce has made it clear the former Chelsea man isn’t part of his plans at St James’ Park and will be left out of the club’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Nottingham Forest had expressed an interest but Watford are expected to win the race after holding talks on Sunday.

Atsu, who earns £30,000 a week on Tyneside, has played just ten minutes of football all season.
