According to a report from Portuguese media outlet the Record, Watford are keen on bringing Benfica goalkeeper Bruno Varela to Vicarage Road this summer.
Javi Gracia will be desperate to bolster his ranks at Watford this season, and more competition for Heurelho Gomes between the sticks will be vitally important for the Hornets.
Watford experienced an inconsistent campaign last season, and eventually finished in 14th position in the Premier League table.
Their fans will be expecting vast improvements this term, and Portuguese publication the Record claims that Gracia is aiming to start his summer rebuild with a swoop for the Benfica stopper.
Good signing for Watford?
At 23, Varela is still relatively inexperienced, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, considering that he will serve as Gomes’ deputy for at least one season.
Standing at 6ft 3in tall, the Benfica goalkeeper possesses an imposing physique, and he is a competent shot stopper.
He also commands his penalty area with authority, and would be the ideal long-term successor for Gomes at Watford.
He is valued at £7.2 million, according to Transfer Markt, and in today’s day and age, that would represent decent value for the Hornets.
