According to Foot Mercato, Watford have opened talks the representatives of Nice full back Youcef Atal as they pursue a summer deal.

It’s claimed that Watford have recently discussed a possible deal with Atal’s agents. However, Napoli are understood to have taken similar steps.

Atal is described as feeling ‘very good’ in Nice, and has a contract with the club until 2023, meaning he likely isn’t itching for a move away.

Still, it’s something of a surprise to hear Watford being in the market for Atal. For one thing, Atal has been linked with some of Europe’s top clubs, so Watford landing him would be a huge coup.

The global pandemic means many clubs aren’t eyeing big summer transfers, yet Watford appear to be trying to move in for Algerian star Atal in a big move.

The 24-year-old has hit seven goals and three assists in 44 games for Nice, proving himself to be a quick and dangerous right back with the ability to play further forward.

Tottenham are ‘very interested’ in Atal according to Le Quotidien du Foot in France, seemingly viewing him as the ideal competition for Serge Aurier at right back.

Spurs don’t have much to spend this summer though given the global pandemic, and that may now see them miss out on the chance to move for Atal.

Losing out to Watford would be difficult for some fans to take, but with Atal seemingly content for now, there may still be time for Tottenham to land him down the line.
