Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal find themselves lagging behind in the chase for Ben Wilmot, according to reports.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (04/03; page 63), Watford are now leading the race to sign Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot, who is also a target for Tottenham and Arsenal.

Wilmot has been earning plenty of plaudits with the League Two side, and The Sun on Sunday suggests that a £1 million move to the Premier League could soon be on the cards for the 18-year-old.

It appeared that Tottenham would be the most likely team to win the race for his signature, with The Sun on Sunday reporting during the last window (13/01; page 68) that they were out in front.

However, The Sun on Sunday (04/03; page 63) is now suggesting that the Hornets have been in contact with Stevenage about a potential deal, so are now ahead of both Mauricio Pochettino’s men and the Gunners in the race for the deal.

The Sun on Sunday adds that Watford believe that the clearer path to the first-team gives them an advantage over Tottenham and Arsenal as the summer window gradually approaches.

Could Tottenham still win Wilmot race?

Given how many young players Pochettino has developed into first-team regulars – whether that be at Spurs or with another club – it would surely be difficult for Wilmot to turn down Spurs if they matched any offer that any of their rivals placed.

Watford, or even Arsenal given their defensive frailties, may be able to make more assurances regarding when he will get into the first-team, but Tottenham can point to the number of young players that they have brought through in recent years and suggest that moving to White Hart Lane will give Wilmot the best chance of developing into a first-team regular in the top flight.
