Watford want to sign Real Mallorca forward Stoichkov before tonight’s transfer deadline, according to La Ultima Hora.

The 26-year-old Spaniard may not have scaled the heights of the man from whom his nickname originates, Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov, but he could still be a useful addition for a Hornets side looking to secure a return to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The well-travelled winger, who can play on the right or left, produced an impressive 16 goals and five assists on loan at Alcorcon last season.

According to reports from Spain, Stoichkov, or Juan Diego Molina Martinez to give him his full title, is desperate to leave Mallorca before the deadline passes.

Watford have now joined Real Betis, Espanyol and Europa League qualifiers Granada in the race, having expressed an interest today.

Mallorca are refusing to budge on Stoichkov’s £2.5 million release clause, although that isn’t a fee that should have Watford rummaging behind the sofa.

Vladimir Ivic’s side have scored just twice in their four Championship games so far and their attack will be blunted further by the impending departure of Gerard Deulofeu to Serie A.
