Watford have joined Celtic in the race to sign Union Berlin talisman Sebastian Andersson after being relegated from the Premier League on Sunday, according to BZ.
After five years, and just as many managers, the Hornets are feeling the sting after a final day defeat to Arsenal condemned them to the drop.
But, if Watford are aiming to ensure their return to the Championship is merely a flying visit, then triggering the £4 million release clause in Andersson’s contract would be an inspired piece of business.
A 6ft 3ins Sweden international, the late-blooming targetman looks tailor-made for British football.
No one scored more than Andersson’s seven headers in the Bundesliga in 2019/20, with his impressive tally of 12 keeping Union safe from the relegation battle throughout.
According to reports, a superb debut campaign in Germany’s top flight has caught the eye of Celtic, Schalke, Lille and, now, a Watford side who found the net just 36 times in 38 games this season.
Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have been linked since late-December.
But, with little movement on Odsonne Edouard’s much-mooted departure, and with Albian Ajeti set to join on loan from West Ham, it seems that Andersson has slipped down the pecking order at Parkhead.
“If a player scored twelve goals in the Bundesliga, it would be surprising if no other club were interested in him,” Union’s sporting director Oliver Ruhnert told Berliner Zeitung a few weeks ago.
