Watford will sign Alaves right-back Kiko Femenia in the summer having agreed personal terms.

That’s according to Spanish newspaper AS, who say the Hornets have beaten competition from the likes of Valencia and Villareal to secure the player who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Femenia, who was once a highly rated midfield prospect and made his La Liga debut at 19, has impressed with Alaves after dropping down to the second tier to rebuild his career.

Having come through at Hercules he spent time at both Barcelona and Real Madrid but never played a first team game for either, criticising the former for “ruining me emotionally.”

He has also suffered from anxiety attacks during his career but having won promotion with Alaves last season and helped them to the Copa del Rey final this, Watford will hope he’s able to deal with the pressures of moving to England in the way Manchester City’s Jesus Navas has overcome similar issues.

Watford are not without options at right-back but no one player has made the position their own with Juan Zuniga, Daryl Janmaat and centre-back Craig Cathcart all being deployed there this season.
