Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron.
Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron – and are pushing to land him in the January transfer window.
The Chronicle report that Newcastle have now watched Almiron nine times this season as they prepare a January bid, in the hope of beating Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United to his signature.
It’s added that, with Almiron earning around £30,000-a-week at Atlanta United, Newcastle don’t envisage any problems with his wages if they get into contract talks with the Paraguayan.
That means that the move ultimately rests with Mike Ashley. The Newcastle owner isn’t known for his big spending, but he will have to do it in order to give Rafael Benitez his top target.
Having been convinced by Almiron from various scouting missions and by his expected wage demands, all that’s left now is for Newcastle to pay up the £25million asking price to get the ball rolling.
That would be a club-record fee though, and Ashley may not be keen to splash that kind of money, even with the club upwardly mobile again after three wins on the spin.
Almiron, who has hit 13 goals and 13 assists in 36 MLS games this season, is the ideal playmaker for Benitez and still has huge potential at just 24, meaning he should be worth the money – but it may all come down to Ashley.
