Joe Gomez leaving Liverpool has been a topic of conversation this summer.
Aston Villa have been linked with signing the England international in recent weeks, with Steven Gerrard ‘really keen‘ on bringing him to the Midlands [The Birmingham Mail].
It has been reported in recent days that Gomez would sign a new contract at Liverpool in pre-season [The Telegraph].
However, that might not be entirely true.
According to The Mirror, Gomez has grown very frustrated under Jurgen Klopp after majorly falling down the pecking order this past season and is considering his future.
The former Charlton defender managed only four Premier League starts during the 2021-22 campaign, having fallen behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.
The Mirror added that Liverpool are relying on Julian Ward to convince the player – whose contract expires in two years – to put pen to paper on an extension this summer, and that the club view him as ‘vital’ for the future.
Joe Gomez leaving Liverpool?
Honestly, he should consider it.
Yes, Van Dijk and Matip won’t be young forever, with both turning 31 this summer.
However, Gomez won’t be 25 forever either and he can’t wait until those two elder statesmen of Klopp’s first XI are no longer sufficient for the German manager.
Gomez has to think about himself and his career and honestly, he won’t play any more regularly with the Reds next season unless one of those three suffers a serious injury.
For the sake of his career – and chances of making England’s World Cup squad – Gomez probably has to leave and although it’ll seemingly hurt Liverpool, viewing him as ‘vital’, they’ll understand his reasoning.
