Everton are interested in appointing former Watford boss Walter Mazzarri – but the Italian is keen on a return to Serie A with AC Milan.
Everton may have something of a vested interest in AC Milan’s Serie A clash with Chievo Verona on Wednesday evening. After all, it appears their hopes of appointing a new manager could rest on how the Rossineri perform in their next couple of league fixtures.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Walter Mazzarri is on the shortlist to replace Ronald Koeman at Everton. The Toffees sacked the Dutchman after a woeful start to the 2017/18 season, compounded by consecutive home defeats on both the domestic and European front to Lyon and Arsenal.
And the former Watford boss Mazzarri has emerged as a surprise contender despite a difficult season at Vicarage Road last time out. TMW, however, report that Mazzarri is instead waiting for the call to return to his native Italy – possibly as a replacement for Vincenzo Montella at AC Milan.
Milan were expected to fight at the top of Serie A this season after spending around £200 million on new talent in the summer but, after winning just four of their opening eight league games, Montella is under huge pressure.
And the former Inter and Napoli boss Mazzarri is understood to be enticed by the prospect of returning to the San Siro.
Consequently, Everton may be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere, the report adding that Burnley boss Sean Dyche has emerged as a frontrunner.
Because it seems that, as long as Montella remains in a job, any deal for Mazzarri could take far too long.
