Aston Villa have joined Leeds United in the race for Josh Doig, according to The Scottish Daily Mail (print edition, page 96, May 21, 2021).
The report has claimed that AC Milan are interested in signing the left-back from Hibernian in the summer transfer window, with Watford having already made a bid of £4 million.
Southampton, Leeds, Stoke City, Cardiff City and Club Brugge are also mentioned in the report.
Leeds have been linked with the left-back before.
According to The Scottish Daily Mail (16/03, p76), Arsenal, Leeds and Manchester City are interested in signing the teenager from Hibernian in the summer of 2021, as covered by HITC Sport.
Villa’s reported interest in the 19-year-old left-back is new.
One can understand why Leeds are looking for a new left-back.
Ezgjan Alioski is likely to leave Elland Road when his current contract runs out.
Like Stuart Dallas, Alioski is a winger by trade and has been converted into a left-back by Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
Matt Targett and Neil Taylor are the two recognised left-backs at Villa.
However, Taylor is out of contract at the Premier League club in a matter of weeks.
So, just how good is Doig?
He is very good, so good that even Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been impressed.
Rangers boss Gerrard told The Scottish Sun in April after facing Hibernian: “I was fascinated with that battle down our right-hand side. I thought Nathan was really good. I think Doig is a good player again with huge potential. Both lads put in a real strong shift.”
Doig made 22 starts and two substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Hibernian this season, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the process.
