Aston Villa are reportedly keeping assessing options ahead of the January transfer window on a new left-back and midfielder, with an emphasis on long-term viability.
According to the Athletic, many young left-backs are being considered by Dean Smith and Johan Lange. Whilst a new midfielder could also be brought in to add more depth to the position. As per the report, the Villa sporting director is eager to bring in players who can develop for the future.
Villa have enjoyed a decent start to the campaign after a frantic summer transfer window. Jack Grealish departed for a British transfer record whilst Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Emi Buendia were brought in to replace the England international.
Indeed, whilst these three players are exciting on paper, Villa could have done with some extra additions to fully flesh out the squad. Whilst Ashley Young also returned to the Birmingham club, Smith is seemingly eager to add more youth to the left-back area.
Matt Targett is the number one man for the position. And at 26, the former Southampton star is reaching the prime of his career. However, signing an understudy would be a good decision from the club in the long-term.
The same goes for the midfield. Whilst Douglas Luiz is still quite raw, John McGinn has reached the peak of his powers, with the Scottish international playing some of the best football he has played in his career.
Factors are at play if Villa make January transfers
Just like Targett, an understudy to both Luiz and McGinn would make sense for Villa. However, in Jacob Ramsey, Smith already has a talented youngster who could fill in this void at the club.
With January just three months away, it will be interesting to see what Villa do in the market. However, it is likely that their position in the table, as well as injuries, will determine what activity is made.
