The Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is considering an attempt to sign the Brentford left-back Rico Henry ahead of next month’s transfer deadline, as West Ham United put their interest on hold, according to The Sun.

Villa and West Ham are among the Premier League clubs credited with an interest in Henry this summer.

But they are said to have found Brentford reluctant to sell.

The Bees have already allowed another of last season’s stars, Ollie Watkins, reunite with Smith at Aston Villa.

And Smith will hope his relationship with Henry – whom he managed at both Brentford and Walsall – will stand him in good stead again, if he can tempt the Championship side into a sale first.

If The Sun is to be believed then he could have one less obstacle, with West Ham said to have prioritised signing a centre-back, ‘with finances tight’.

But Brentford are in a strong position to negotiate over Henry, who still has three years left on his contract.

The 23-year-old has started and completed both the Bees’ games so far this season.

Let us know – would Aston Villa or West Ham United be Henry’s best move?
