Mauricio Pochettino will reportedly avoid signing another defender, despite learning the extent of Jan Vertonghen’s ankle injury.

According to the Daily Star, the severity of Jan Vertonghen’s injury will not change Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for new signings this month – but no Tottenham will defenders will be allowed to leave.

Vertonghen, 29, suffered a nasty ankle injury against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon, with Spurs left hoping that their key defender wouldn’t be missing for too long.

After Saturday’s game, Spurs boss Pochettino told ESPN that he wouldn’t be making any moves for new defenders in light of Vertonghen’s latest injury blow, though that was before Tottenham learned the full extent of his injury.

Now, Spurs know that it’s ankle ligament damage that Vertonghen has suffered, and the centre back may be missing until March, but it doesn’t appear to be changing Pochettino’s plans for incomings.

The Daily Star report that Pochettino is sticking to his guns in terms of avoiding a move for another centre back, given that Kevin Wimmer and Ben Davies are in line to take his place in the Spurs defence.

Both players offer natural left-footed replacements for Vertonghen, giving Pochettino the balance he likes in defence, and Davies particularly has experience as a left-sided defender in a back three having played there for Wales at Euro 2016.

However, it’s added that Vertonghen’s absence means that no defenders will be allowed to leave the club during this month’s transfer window, with both Wimmer and Davies recently linked with departures

Get German Football News recently reported that Wimmer’s former club Koln wanted to re-sign him, whilst The Sun claimed over the weekend that Manchester City wanted to sign Davies, but neither player will be allowed to leave White Hart Lane in the next two weeks as they battle to replace Vertonghen.
