West Ham’s attempts to sign Maxi Gomez may be over.
According to Valencia-based newspaper SuperDeporte, Valencia have accelerated their pursuit of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez – and may have a deal done by tonight.
Gomez, 22, has been a star since joining Celta from Defensor Sporting in 2017, hitting 30 goals in 73 games for the La Liga side.
The Uruguayan target man has impressed with his brutish style as well as his goal record, and Valencia appear to have won the race for his signature.
It’s believed that a deal is now close for Gomez to head to the Mestalla, with Valencia striking a clever deal which will see them pay just €18million (£16million).
They’ve managed this by offering ex-Celta youngster Santi Mina as part of the deal, whilst a youngster – believed to be Jorge Saenz – will go out on loan to Celta too.
That appears to be enough for Celta to agree a deal, and Valencia hope to have the move wrapped up within hours as they attempt to fend off West Ham United.
West Ham have been targeting Gomez for about a year now, with boss Manuel Pellegrini a huge fan. There have been so many reports about Gomez heading to East London this summer, and Sky Sports reported just yesterday that he wanted a move to West Ham.
Yet with Valencia able to offer Champions League football, and Celta seemingly happy with their offer, it looks like West Ham will lose out on their top striking target – and that £16million fee will leave fans frustrated, even if it’s been brought down thanks to Mina’s involvement.
