Liverpool completing a move for Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk is reportedly still a long way off.
According to a report in the Daily Echo, Liverpool’s move for Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk is far from concluded.
There were suggestions yesterday that Van Dijk’s move to Anfield had become an inevitability, with bookies suspending betting on the transfer.
However, Southampton believe that they are still in the driving seat with negotiations and are under no pressure to sell.
The Saints know that Van Dijk is under contract for the long-term, and feel that keeping him for another season will not reduce his value.
As a result, Southampton are said to be demanding more than the £60 million fee which Liverpool are reportedly willing to pay.
Liverpool have put Van Dijk at the top of their wishlist this summer, as they look to improve their defensive options.
But only a mammoth bid would convince Southampton to sell, and it remains to be seen whether the transfer will be financed.
