Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion target Marcos Alonso was considering a move to a Premier League rival but now looks set to extend his stay at Chelsea, as reported by The Sun (21 February, page 63).

Is the Spain international the biggest beneficiary of Thomas Tuchel’s arrival at Stamford Bridge?

In the space of just a few weeks, Alonso has gone from being frozen out under Frank Lampard to one of the first names on the Chelsea team sheet, relegating £50 million summer signing Ben Chilwell to the bench.

The 30-year-old has started four of Chelsea’s past five league games and, according to The Sun, a new contract will be the reward for a dramatic turnaround in fortunes.

Alonso is open to discussing fresh terms at Stamford Bridge, although it remains to be seen whether he will be offered an increase on his current £100,000-a-week wages (Spotrac).

Any lingering hopes Crystal Palace had of luring the former Real Madrid youngster to Selhurst Park appear to have fizzled into nothingness. Palace need a left-back to replace the out-of-contract Patrick van Aanholt but it seems they will have to look elsewhere (Daily Mail).

West Brom, meanwhile, tried to sign Alonso in January (Athletic).

However, with the Baggies hurtling towards relegation you’d think Alonso would have few regrets about missing out on a move to the Hawthorns.
