AS Roma will reportedly swoop in for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz should Steven Nzonzi make a move to Qatar in the coming days.
According to CalcioMercato, Jose Mourinho’s is plotting a ‘revolution’ to sign the Brazilian international. The two-time UEFA Champions League winner is a fan of Luiz, but a transfer could only happen if Roma can offload Nzonzi.
The French international has been keen to leave the Italian capital for some time. But interest was minimal during the summer transfer window, with Roma shopping around Europe for a replacement.
Granit Xhaka was heavily linked with a move to the Serie A giants. But after a move collapsed, Roma shifted their attention to Luiz, who has been a regular under Dean Smith since signing for Villa.
The midfielder has started five games in the Premier League for Villa this campaign. With Luiz bagging the game-winning assist over the weekend against Manchester United. Moreover, the result put the Birmingham side up to eighth in the table.
Indeed, whilst Luiz has been key to Villa’s rise up the Premier League in the past two seasons, a move to Italy could well be possible should Roma put in a suitable offer for the 23-year-old midfielder.
The prospect of playing Europe could be tempting for Luiz. And whilst there is every chance Villa could well finish in the top-seven this season, playing under Mourinho for Roma might result in a UEFA Europa League or Champions League finish for the Serie A club.
