Report: Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to start Liverpool’s Premier League opener

Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the Liverpool teenager.

Liverpool teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to start the club’s first game of the season, according to The Telegraph.

England international Nathaniel Clyne is set to miss Liverpool’s match away to Watford next week through injury, putting the right-back spot up for grabs.

Jon Flanagan and Joe Gomez are under consideration for selection but it appears 18-year-old Alexander-Arnold is manager Jurgen Klopp’s first choice.

This would be a big show of faith in the youngster and a well earned one, after excellent performances for the under-23s last season.

He made two Premier League starts in 2016/17 and five substitute appearances, and also featured in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Jurgen Klopp has had mixed success at Watford’s Vicarage Road, suffering a defeat there in his first season in charge, and winning last season thanks to a wonder goal from midfielder Emre Can.

Alexander-Arnold will be a bold selection but many Liverpool fans will feel it is the right one, and Nathaniel Clyne may be watching on nervously, as the teenager could lay a real claim to hold down the position, and put his Liverpool and England career on notice.
