Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba was reportedly expected to join FC Porto, but Turkish side Trabzonspor have thrown a spanner in the works according to Portuguese outlet Sabado.

The 23-year-old has been closing in on a move to Porto, finally ending his Newcastle nightmare at St. James’ Park that has seen him fail to make a single Premier League appearance in 2018 under Rafa Benitez.

The likes of Florian Lejeune, Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark have remained above Mbemba throughout the entire 2017-18 campaign, leaving DR Congo international Mbemba to fight off scraps.

However, a move to Porto could now be shelved, with Trabzonspor looking to land the former Anderlecht defender this summer. It is believed that Newcastle had agreed a deal for Mbemba to move to Porto.

The Toon are looking to sell Mbemba to the highest bidder, and now Trabzonspor are said to have outbid Porto for the powerhouse. But a move to Porto could still be on the cards.

That is because Mbemba prefers a move to the Portuguese giants after they qualified for the Champions League, while Trabzonspor missed out on European qualification after finishing in fifth.
