Tony Gallacher is facing an uncertain future at Premier League giants Liverpool after his move to Sunderland collapsed at the eleventh hour, according to the Northern Echo.

On paper, this looked like one of those deals that would have suited every party down to the ground.

If Greek international Kostas Tsimikas was struggling for opportunities at Anfield, with the outstanding Andy Robertson firmly established as Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice left-back, then Gallacher was never likely to force his way into the first-team picture.

The Glasgow-born 22-year-old has only made 11 senior appearances since joining Liverpool from Falkirk in 2018 – and all but one of those came during a loan spell at MLS outfit Toronto FC.

Gallacher, then, was crying out for a fresh start and it looked as if he was going to get one too, with Sunderland in talks over a deal that would have seen the left-sided defender swap Merseyside for the banks of the Wear.

Why did Tony Gallacher’s Sunderland move collapse?

According to The Echo, Sunderland came to an agreement with Liverpool that would have seen Gallacher join the League One promotion-hunters on a free transfer.

For whatever reason, that deal has now fallen through, although neither The Echo nor The Mail seem to understand why.

It is no secret that Black Cats boss Lee Johnson is desperate to bring in a new left-back before the club’s season opener against Wigan Athletic – Charlie Wyke’s Wigan, no less – on August 7.

Denver Hume, the Sunderland academy graduate and one of the first names on the team-sheet during the Johnson era, became a free agent when his contract expired a month ago, although the Wearsiders have not given up on tying him down to a new deal.

Hume’s future is likely to come under further scrutiny now Gallacher appears to have slipped through Johnson’s fingers.
