Tottenham Hotspur have been mentioned as a surprise suitor for Roma winger Diego Perotti.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Roma winger Diego Perotti is wanted by Tottenham Hotspur, but he is seen as key to manager Eusebio Di Francesco’s plans moving forward.
Perotti, 29, made his name with Sevilla following a 2007 move from Deportivo Moron, though injuries cursed him before a 2014 switch to Genoa, where he reinvigorated his career with five goals in 45 games.
The pacey Argentinian moved on to Roma, and this past season he hit eight goals and five assists in all competitions, but he was limited to just 17 league starts as injuries again troubled him.
Now, Roma have plenty of options out wide. The signing of Justin Kluivert from Ajax and the pursuit of Sassuolo’s Domenico Berardi comes whilst manager Di Francesco already has the likes of Stephan El Shaarawy, Gregoire Defrel, Cengiz Under and Perotti, with six wingers for two positions clearly too many.
At least one may have to leave, and Tuttomercatoweb now report that Tottenham Hotspur are keen to offer Perotti a move away from the Stadio Olimpico this summer – but a move wouldn’t be easy.
It’s stated that Roma and manager Di Francesco want to keep Perotti in the italian capital as his is key to their plans moving forward, even with interest from Spurs and Spanish clubs.
In truth, this is a link that doesn’t make a ton of sense for Spurs. Yes, boss Mauricio Pochettino is bound to be familiar with compatriot Perotti, but he doesn’t fit the profile of a Spurs signing.
Perotti has well-documented injury problems, and at 29 those are likely to get even worse, whilst his age means he has no resale value to come, and any concrete move from Spurs would be a huge, huge surprise.
