A report has suggested that Everton and Newcastle United tried to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Vincent Janssen this summer.

Vincent Janssen of Tottenham Hotspur goes down injured during the Premier League match between Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor on April 1, 2017 in Burnley, England.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (print edition; 10th September 2017; page 58), Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen rejected the chance to join Everton and Newcastle during the summer transfer window.

Janssen endured a very difficult first season with Spurs following his £17 million move in 2016 (via The Sun on Sunday), scoring just six times in 35 games in all competitions and arguably failing to be the cover that Harry Kane needed.

The 23-year-old suffered a further setback on transfer deadline day as Spurs added Fernando Llorente to their ranks – and that seemed to prompt his loan exit as he joined Fenerbahce for the season following the end of the English window.

But it appears that Janssen had the chance to stay in the Premier League this summer, with The Sun on Sunday (print edition; 10th September 2017; page 58) reporting that the Netherlands international rejected both Everton and Newcastle during the window – while Stoke and Brighton were also unable to lure him away.

While Newcastle added Joselu to their ranks, it certainly appeared to be a frustrating summer for the Magpies, and they arguably do not have the depth up front that would give Rafa Benitez the confidence he was perhaps hoping to have.

In contrast, Everton were incredibly busy during the summer and appeared to do some brilliant pieces of business. Nevertheless, with Romelu Lukaku moving on, Ronald Koeman perhaps felt that even with Sandro Ramirez and Wayne Rooney arriving, adding Janssen may have been the icing on the cake.
