Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly failed with a bid for Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong ahead of the January transfer window.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham Hotspur have had a €50million (£45million) bid rejected for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Spurs failed to bring in a single signing over the summer, leaving Mauricio Pochettino to work with the same squad which ended last season in third place in the Premier League.
Fans have been left disappointed, and with rumours surrounding Mousa Dembele’s future, another midfielder may well be wanted in the January transfer window.
Speculation over the last week has suggested that Tottenham want to land Ajax ace Frenkie de Jong, but their first move for him may have been snubbed.
Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo report that Barcelona have offered up to €30million (£27million) for De Jong, which has been rejected, as has Tottenham’s alleged huge offer of €50million (£45million).
It’s stated that Ajax have told both clubs in no uncertain terms that De Jong is not for sale at any price, with both Barcelona and Tottenham – group stage rivals in this season’s Champions League – pursuing his signature.
The 21-year-old midfielder has starred for Ajax, impressing with his ability to dictate the game from a deep-lying role, as well as charge forward with exceptional dribbling ability – just like Dembele.
Ajax have sold a remarkable list of talented players over the years, but appear to be standing firm on De Jong – and it’s unclear just how much Spurs would have to offer to tempt them into a January deal.
