Tottenham Hotspur are ready to pay £14.5 million for Lucas Vazquez and have held talks with Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane about the Spaniard’s future, according to Defensa Central.

Every successful football club needs an unsung hero like this jet-heeled little Galician.

A winger by trade, the most hard-working and down-to-earth of footballers has been forced to fill in at right-back of late with first-team football in his preferred position becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

Not that Vazquez has complained, or even let out the subtlest sigh of frustration.

The academy graduate has never been one of the first names on Madrid’s team-sheet but he has been rewarded for his loyalty and relentless work ethic with a remarkable 11 trophies, including three Champions League titles and the 2020 La Liga crown.

But, at the age of 29, time is running out for the one-time Espanyol star speedster if he wants to be a leading man rather than just a recurring character in an all-star cast.

A move to an underperforming Tottenham side could offer Vazquez the chance to prove, like former PSG benchwarmer Lucas Moura, that he can be a prized catch in a somewhat smaller pond.

Defensa Central reports that Spurs are happy to pay £14.5 million. The 2019 Champions League finalists have discussed a deal with Zidane, who himself has informed Vazquez that he will remain behind Rodrygo Goes and a fully fit Marcos Asensio in the Bernabau pecking order.

Vazquez started just eight La Liga games in 2019/20.

And, considering that Jose Mourinho adores hard-running wingers who offer as much defensively as they do going forward, it is hard to imagine a player better suited for this Spurs side.
