Report: Tottenham were confident they were signing £40m star, but there’s been a twist

Tottenham Hotspur were ‘confident’ of signing Dean Henderson this summer, right up until three weeks ago, The Sun have reported.

Henderson is thought to be on Tottenham’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, as they eye up potential replacements for Hugo Lloris.

The French stopper has been shaky at times this year, and it is felt that Spurs now want a more reliable number one in net.

Henderson could be that man, and there was apparently a real confidence within Tottenham that they would land him in a £40 million deal.

However, since that start of the month, Henderson has been brought into Manchester United’s starting line-up and has performed well.

There is now a real feeling at Old Trafford that Henderson could replace David De Dea permanently, with the Spaniard moving on in the summer.

If that does happen then Spurs know their chances of landing the England international will be extremely limited, and it could be that they have to look elsewhere.

Tottenham also have Nick Pope and Sam Johnstone on their radar, the Sun say.

Any of the trio could be a solid choice to replace Lloris, as they are all proven at Premier League level.

Pope, Johnstone and Henderson have all arguably been more solid than Lloris this term, and while they may not have the same level of experience as the World Cup winner, they could well prove to be an upgrade on him next term.
