According to a report by The Times, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Villarreal defender Pau Torres.

Spurs certainly want to bolster their defence this summer, and they’ve already taken a big step towards doing so in signing Cristian Romero from Atalanta.

The London club are also reportedly interested in Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu, so it seems as though there is a real recruitment drive at the back right now.

Torres would be an excellent addition. He was fantastic at Euro 2020 for Spain, he’s a Europa League winner and he’s been scouted to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

So, what type of defender is Torres?

Well, standing at 6 ft 4 he’s aerially dominant, but he also possesses great pace, ranking as the fifth-fastest player in La Liga in 2019/20, and in a league full of speedsters such as Ousmane Dembele and Gareth Bale, who were both in the La Liga at that point, that’s an incredible feat.

Torres would add so much to this Tottenham backline, and if he’s combined with Romero and Tomiyasu in Nuno Espirito Santo’s patented 3-4-3 system, Tottenham could be a frightening defensive force this term.

The 24-year-old has a £55m release clause, but Spurs are hoping to land the Villarreal star, who was once described by Unai Emery as ‘amazing’ for a smaller fee.
