According to The Sun, Roberto Martinez is keen to return to the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur a potential destination.

It’s claimed that Martinez is on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Jose Mourinho having sacked him in April.

Martinez is under contract as Belgium manager, but it’s suggested that he would allow his ‘trusted backroom staff’ to take pre-season training whilst he works with Belgium at the European Championships.

That’s an interesting idea; Graeme Jones was a trusted lieutenant at Wigan Atheltic, but is now in an important coaching role at Newcastle United.

Thierry Henry has worked with Martinez in the Belgium setup, but him heading to Tottenham seems like a bad idea, whilst Shaun Maloney wouldn’t be available for Spurs given his Belgium commitments.

Dennis Lawrence would be available, and he worked with Martinez at Swansea and Everton. Formerly the Trinidad and Tobago boss, he makes great sense in this situation.

Martinez is believed to be admired by Tottenham, and with Daniel Levy seeking a progressive coach who plays attractive football, he looks to be a chief target for Spurs.

Getting back to daily management is thought to appeal to Martinez, who hasn’t been in club management for five years now having been axed by Everton in 2016.

Spurs have allegedly missed out on Julian Nagelsmann, Jesse Marsch and Erik ten Hag, and with the shortlist narrowing, Martinez may well emerge as a leading target – especially if he can rely on others to take training whilst he’s at the Euros.
