Tottenham Hotspur actually tried to sign Wesley Fofana from St Etienne last summer, ESPN suggest.
Fofana ended up moving to Leicester City in a £36.5 million deal (ESPN), but Tottenham had identified the 20-year-old as a potential addition.
Unfortunately for Spurs they were unable to get a deal done, as Leicester had a head start on them.
The Foxes have great contacts in France, and that meant Tottenham were always on the back-foot in the battle to sign the youngster.
Spurs’s upset at missing out on the deal will surely have been increased due to Fofana’s brilliant start to life at Leicester.
The technically excellent centre-back has slotted into life in the Premier League seamlessly and already looks to be one of the stand out young talents in the division.

Tottenham do still appear to be on the hunt for a new central defender, although they did bring in an addition of their own in that area last summer.
Spurs signed Joe Rodon who has made a promising start to life in North London, even if he hasn’t enjoyed the same massive impact as Fofana at the King Power Stadium.
