Tottenham Hotspur are set to keep their word to manager Mauricio Pochettino by stepping up interest in Anthony Martial, according to The Mail.

Manager Pochettino signed a new contract a fortnight ago and reportedly told chairman Daniel Levy that Martial is top of his wanted list this summer.

The Mail report Spurs officials will open talks with Manchester United next week over signing the Frenchman.

Spurs are said to be hopeful of a swift resolution if a fee can be agreed, with Martial left out of France’s World Cup squad.

Actually getting United to agree at all, let alone quickly, is going to be an uphill battle.

The Red Devils made a big investment when they signed Martial in 2015 and they have given no indications they are ready to sell him.

Martial did lose his place to Alexis Sanchez late last season and began the FA Cup final on the substitute’s bench and missed the semi-final entirely.

This will give Spurs hope of persuading Martial his future lies with them, and his contractual situation is in their favour too.

He has one year left to run, although United have an option to extend the deal until 2020 which they are likely to do.
