Tottenham Hotspur were heavily linked with a move to sign Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez, but no deal happened before the transfer deadline.
Fabio Paratici’s arrival as Tottenham’s director of football unsurprisingly resulted in Spurs being linked with an outrageous number of Serie A players.
In the end, only two signings came in from Italy with both Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero arriving from Atalanta.
Maybe Paratici wasn’t quite as enamoured with the Italian market as many thought he would be, and one player who missed out on a move was Nandez.
The Uruguayan international became a Tottenham target relatively late in the window as Paratici went looking for a new midfielder.
La Nuova Sardegna reported last month that Tottenham had thrashed out a deal to sign Nandez, only for Tuttomercatoweb to suggest that talks were still ongoing.
They even suggested that the deal may only be done on deadline day, but the window shut without Nandez landing a move away from Cagliari.
In truth, the links to Tottenham quietened down towards the end of the window, possibly because Tottenham knew they couldn’t shift Tanguy Ndombele.

Centrotrentuno report that Watford actually made a last-gasp bid for Nandez, and Napoli had a go too, but Cagliari felt that Nandez was too important to let go in the end.
Cagliari weren’t happy with the loan-to-buy offers for Nandez, which was seemingly what Paratici wanted to do for Tottenham in the pursuit of Nandez.
They do note that Nandez may look to leave in January, and maybe Tottenham will keep an eye on him over the coming months.
For now though, he is just another player who was heavily linked but ultimately came nowhere near to signing for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
